Why does descaling come first
Applying protection over contamination is not protection โ it is concealment.
Moisture becomes sealed against the metal, corrosion continues beneath a treated-looking surface, and the problem is made harder to identify and more expensive to resolve.
Over time, the underside of a classic car accumulates road debris, old underseal, surface rust, and compacted dirt. These layers do not sit harmlessly on top of the metal. They trap moisture, accelerate corrosion, and prevent any subsequent treatment from bonding or penetrating as it should.
Applying underbody protection over contamination is not protection โ it is concealment. Moisture is sealed in rather than excluded, and corrosion continues unseen beneath a surface that appears treated.
Descaling also serves as an assessment. Clearing the surface reveals the true condition of the metal beneath โ where rust has taken hold, where structural concern exists, and what the correct course of action should be before any product is applied.

Structural integrity is everything
The value of a classic car โ financially and historically โ is inseparable from its structural condition. Matching-numbers status, original chassis integrity, and unmodified sill construction are all factors that hinge on whether the underbody has been properly maintained over the vehicle’s lifetime.
Once corrosion takes hold in structural sections it is rarely contained. A car that requires chassis replacement or full sill surgery has almost always lost its matching-numbers status and a significant portion of its value along with it. Underseal treatment applied preventatively costs a fraction of the repair work it avoids.

HOW WE WORK
Every treatment follows the same rigorous preparation
Every underbody protection follows the same four-stage rhythm. The pace varies with the vehicle and the brief โ the rhythm does not.

Inspection
The vehicle is placed on a lift and the underbody assessed fully โ existing coatings, corrosion extent, and access points are all documented before any work is agreed.
02 / STRIP
Descaling & cleaning
Loose scale, old underseal, and surface contamination are removed. No product is applied to a dirty or compromised surface โ preparation determines longevity.
03 / APPLICATION
Treatment application
The agreed product is applied โ whether sprayed, brushed, or injected โ to the correct specification, with cavity sections and seams given particular attention.
04 / FINISH
Inspection & sign-off
Coverage is checked before the vehicle is lowered. Any areas requiring additional treatment are addressed before sign-off. The car leaves properly protected.

Frequently asked about underbody protection
There is no single correct answer โ it depends on the car’s construction, its current condition, how it is used, and what outcome you are aiming for. We carry out a full underbody inspection before recommending anything. Speak to our team and we will advise you based on the actual vehicle.
Waxoyl can in many cases be applied over sound existing coverage, as it is a penetrating product. However, if the existing underseal is flaking, cracked, or trapping moisture beneath it, we will recommend removal first. Raptor always requires bare metal preparation โ it cannot be applied over existing coatings.
Applied correctly, underbody protection preserves matching-numbers status rather than affecting it. Clear Waxoyl is specifically designed for cars where the original surface must remain visible and unaltered beneath the product.
Waxoyl and cavity wax treatments typically remain effective for five to ten years depending on use and storage conditions. Raptor, as a cured rigid coating, generally has a longer mechanical service life but should be inspected periodically. We can advise on the expected service life for your specific vehicle and treatment.
