Stopping rust
before it starts
The most vulnerable part of any classic car is the part you never see. Proper underseal treatment is the single most effective form of preventative maintenance available to a classic car owner.

Why does decaling come first?
Applying protection over contamination is not protection โ it is concealment.
Moisture becomes sealed against the metal, corrosion continues beneath a treated-looking surface, and the problem is made harder to identify and more expensive to resolve.
Over time, the underside of a classic car accumulates road debris, old underseal, surface rust, and compacted dirt. These layers do not sit harmlessly on top of the metal. They trap moisture, accelerate corrosion, and prevent any subsequent treatment from bonding or penetrating as it should.
Applying underbody protection over contamination is not protection โ it is concealment. Moisture is sealed in rather than excluded, and corrosion continues unseen beneath a surface that appears treated.
Descaling also serves as an assessment. Clearing the surface reveals the true condition of the metal beneath โ where rust has taken hold, where structural concern exists, and what the correct course of action should be before any product is applied.
key points
01
Removes trapped moisture
Accumulated debris and failed underseal hold moisture against bare metal. Descaling removes this and allows the surface to dry fully before treatment begins.
02
Ensures product adhesion
No underseal, wax, or coating bonds correctly to a contaminated surface. Proper preparation is what makes the protection last.
03
Exposes the true condition
Descaling reveals corrosion that surface layers have been concealing. Any structural concerns are identified and addressed before protection is applied.
04
Removes failing old underseal
Cracked or peeling underseal traps moisture beneath it. It must be cleared โ leaving it in place and coating over it makes matters worse, not better.

why it matters
Structural integrity is everything
The value of a classic car โ financially and historically โ is inseparable from its structural condition. Matching-numbers status, original chassis integrity, and unmodified sill construction are all factors that hinge on whether the underbody has been properly maintained over the vehicle’s lifetime.
Once corrosion takes hold in structural sections, it is rarely contained. A car that requires chassis replacement or full sill surgery has almost always lost its matching-numbers status and a significant portion of its value along with it. Underseal treatment applied preventatively costs a fraction of the repair work it avoids.
01
Preserves matching-numbers status and originality
02
Prevents sill, chassis, and floor corrosion from taking hold
03
Protects structural integrity for long-term value retention
04
Significantly extends the interval between major bodywork
05
Complements full restorations and storage programmes
how we work
Every treatment follows the same rigorous preparation
Every underbody protection follows the same four-stage rhythm. The pace varies with the vehicle and the brief โ the rhythm does not.
01 / assess
Inspection
The vehicle is placed on a lift and the underbody assessed fully โ existing coatings, corrosion extent, and access points are all documented before any work is agreed.
02 / strip
Descaling & cleaning
Loose scale, old underseal, and surface contamination are removed. No product is applied to a dirty or compromised surface โ preparation determines longevity.
03 / application
Treatment application
The agreed product is applied โ whether sprayed, brushed, or injected โ to the correct specification, with cavity sections and seams given particular attention.
04 / finish
Inspection & sign-off
Coverage is checked before the vehicle is lowered. Any areas requiring additional treatment are addressed before sign-off. The car leaves properly protected.
common questions
FAQs
Where can I get classic car underbody protection in North Yorkshire?
At our workshops in Malton, North Yorkshire, on the A64 between York and Scarborough. We offer five treatments: Waxoyl, Clear Waxoyl, cavity waxing and Raptor, with descaling as the preparation beforehand. Every car is inspected on a lift before any treatment is recommended, and we have treated more than 100 marques.
Why does a classic car need underbody protection?
The underbody is the most vulnerable part of a classic. Sills, floors and chassis corrode out of sight, and by the time rust shows, it is usually structural. Underbody protection slows that corrosion, preserves the original metal and lengthens the interval between major bodywork.
Which treatment is right for my car?
It depends on the carโs construction, condition, use and your plans for it, so we start with a full inspection on the lift. Waxoyl suits most classics. Clear Waxoyl suits concours and show cars. Cavity waxing protects sills and enclosed sections, particularly on monocoque cars. Raptor suits cars used year round, on gravel roads or off road, including Land Rovers and 4x4s.
What is the difference between Waxoyl and Clear Waxoyl?
Both are self healing, penetrate seams and displace moisture. Clear Waxoyl leaves the original surface visible beneath it, so it suits concours and show cars where the underside will be inspected.
Do you offer cavity waxing in North Yorkshire?
Yes. Cavity wax is injected into the sills and other enclosed sections that a spray canโt reach, where moisture collects and corrosion starts unseen. It suits most classics, particularly monocoque cars and those with complex sills, and is a natural final step after a full restoration.
What is Raptor treatment?
Raptor is a heavy duty coating that resists impacts and stone chips and stands up to all weather. It suits cars used year round, on gravel roads or off road, including Land Rovers and 4x4s. It must be applied to bare metal, so existing coatings are removed first.
Why does descaling come first?
Protection applied over dirt, scale or failing underseal doesnโt protect the car. It hides the problem, sealing moisture against the metal so corrosion carries on unseen. Descaling removes trapped moisture, contamination and failing old underseal, shows the true condition of the metal and gives the new treatment a sound surface to bond to.
Can you apply a treatment over existing underseal?
Sometimes. Waxoyl can often go over existing coverage that is sound. Underseal that is flaking or trapping moisture must be removed first, and Raptor always needs bare metal. The inspection tells us which applies to your car.
How long does underbody protection last?
It depends on the treatment and on how the car is used and stored. Waxoyl, Clear Waxoyl and cavity wax last several years, and Raptor longer still, though every treatment should be inspected periodically.
How is the work carried out?
The car goes on a lift, and the underbody is assessed and documented (existing coatings, extent of corrosion and access points) before any work is agreed. We then descale and clean, apply the treatment by spray, brush or injection with particular attention to cavities and seams, and check coverage before the car is lowered, treating any gaps.
Will underbody protection affect my carโs originality?
Applied correctly, it protects originality. Slowing corrosion preserves the original sills, floors and chassis, and Clear Waxoyl leaves the original finish visible for concours inspection.
Can underbody protection be done alongside other work?
Yes. It is often carried out alongside a full restoration, MOT preparation or preparing a car for storage, so the car only needs to be booked in once.
