the process
Paintwork brought back to its finest
Taking your car to a concours level does not have to come at the expense of a bare-metal body restoration. Sometimes a machine polish is all that is needed to return your paintwork to a deep, lustrous finish.
Using professional dual-action and rotary polishing systems, our technicians systematically remove the defects and oxidation that accumulate over years of use, revealing the clarity and depth that were always present beneath the surface.
We work on the full car or individual panels โ no job is too large or too small.
What we correct
Common paint defects we resolve
Classic and prestige vehicles accumulate a range of paint defects over time. Machine polishing addresses all of the following, often dramatically.
01
Swirl Marks
Fine circular scratches caused by improper washing or polishing. Under direct light, they appear as a spider-web pattern, robbing paint of depth and gloss.
02
Light Scratches
Surface-level scratches that have not penetrated through the clear coat. Polishing removes the damaged layer around the scratch, blending it to an invisible finish.
03
Water spots
Mineral deposits left when water evaporates on the paint surface. They etch into the clear coat over time and require mechanical removal to fully eliminate.
04
Oxidation & Fading
UV exposure degrades the clear coat, leaving paint chalky or faded. Polishing removes the oxidised layer and restores colour saturation and depth.
05
Holograms
Buffer trails left by incorrect machine polishing. These circular haze marks are most visible in artificial light and require careful correction to remove.
06
Paint Transfer
Light paint transfer from minor contacts can often be removed through polishing without repainting. We assess each case and advise accordingly.
The way we work
How a machine polish project progresses
Every machine polish follows a structured sequence โ click each stage to read more.
01
Paint Assessment
We measure paint depth across all panels and map defects before any machine touches the car.
02
Decontamination
Full wash, clay bar, and iron fallout removal. Polishing over contamination embeds it further โ this step is non-negotiable.
03
Compound Stage
A cutting compound matched to the defect level removes the damaged clear coat layer systematically across each panel.
04
Polish & Refine
A finer polish removes micro-marring left by the compound stage, increasing gloss and refining to a mirror-like clarity.
05
Protection Applied
Corrected paint is unprotected. We apply wax, sealant, or ceramic coating to lock in the result.

common questions
FAQs
Where can I get paint correction for a classic car in North Yorkshire?
At our workshops in Malton, North Yorkshire, on the A64 between York and Scarborough. We machine polish classic and prestige cars, from a single panel to the whole car, in three grades: Enhancement, Full Correction and Prestige.
What is machine polishing?
Machine polishing removes a very thin layer of damaged paint using dual action and rotary polishers. It takes out the swirl marks, light scratches and oxidation that build up over the years, and brings back the depth and clarity of the finish.
Can machine polishing save me a respray?
Often, yes. If the paint has enough depth and the defects sit near the surface, correction restores the finish without a respray. If the paint is too thin, or the damage goes deeper, our Bodyshop can carry out a localised paint repair first.
What defects can machine polishing remove?
Swirl marks, light scratches, water spots, oxidation and fading, and holograms left by incorrect buffing. Light paint transfer from minor contact can often be removed too, which we assess case by case.
Can scratches be polished out?
Only scratches that sit in the surface. If you can catch a scratch with your fingernail, it is usually too deep to polish out and needs a localised paint repair first.
Does polishing remove paint?
Yes, a small amount. That is why we measure paint depth across every panel before any polishing begins, and stop wherever the paint is too thin to correct safely.
Can you polish just one panel?
Yes. There is no minimum, so a single panel can be corrected on its own.
Can machine polishing be combined with other work?
Yes. It pairs naturally with ceramic coating, underbody protection and servicing, and many owners schedule the work during a storage period, so the car is ready when they want it back.
Can you polish original single-stage paint?
Many classics were finished in single stage paint, with the colour and gloss in one layer and no clear coat above it. Polishing removes a little of the colour itself, so depth readings and a measured approach matter even more.
Which grade is right for my car?
Enhancement suits paint in good condition: a full decontamination wash, clay bar, a one-step machine polish and a finishing wax or sealant. Full Correction is the grade most often chosen for cars returning from storage, adding iron fallout removal, a cutting compound stage and a refining polish. Prestige is for show and concours cars, adding multi-stage compounding, jewelling and inspection under show lighting, with ceramic coating as an option.
Do you offer concours preparation in North Yorkshire?
Yes. Our Prestige grade prepares a car for show and concours, with multi-stage compounding, a jewelling stage to bring out the final depth of gloss, and inspection under show lighting before handover. Allow three to five days, and book well ahead of the event.
How long does machine polishing take?
It depends on the size of the car and the grade. Enhancement takes one to two days and Prestige three to five days.
How is the work carried out?
We measure paint depth and map defects across every panel first. The car then has a full wash, clay bar and iron fallout removal, because polishing over contamination only grinds it in. A cutting compound matched to the defects is worked panel by panel, a finer polish refines the finish, and protection is applied last.
How do I protect the paint after polishing?
Freshly corrected paint has no protection of its own, so we finish with a wax, sealant or ceramic coating. Ceramic coating gives the longest protection, up to seven years.
How do I book machine polishing?
Call 01653 692090 or email sales@maltoncoachworks.com, and weโll assess the paint and recommend a grade, with no obligation. We are open Monday to Thursday, 8.15am to 5pm, and Friday, 8.15am to 4pm.
