From vintage pre-war to moden prestige

Our team of experienced classic car technicians have worked across ten decades of motoring history, diagnosing both mechanical and electrical faults and remedying them by minor repair, full rewiring, or complete rebuilds.

Full engine strip, assessment, and rebuild to original specification โ€” or improved tolerances where appropriate. We work across all engine types from vintage side-valves through to twin-cam and V-configuration units found in prestige vehicles.

Ageing or degraded wiring is one of the most common causes of issues in classic cars. We carry out full loom replacement and bespoke electrical work, retaining the period-correct appearance of the interior wherever possible.

Comprehensive gearbox and differential overhaul work. We rebuild to original specification or upgrade where drivability improvements are required โ€” always with a clear discussion with you before work begins.

Through our extensive network of classic car parts suppliers, we achieve strong pricing on components โ€” ensuring cost-efficient repairs without compromising on quality. Our parts department handles sourcing so nothing delays your project.

SU, Weber & Dellโ€™Orto specialists

Is your car not firing on all cylinders? Servicing carburettors and ignition systems is a regular and critical part of classic car maintenance. Setting them up correctly takes time, patience, and genuine expertise โ€” and the difference to how a car drives is transformative.

We service, tune, and rebuild SU, Weber, Solex, Dellโ€™Orto, and Zenith carburettors. Whether it is a single carb on a workhorse classic or a bank of twin-choke Webers on a sports car, we get them running in balance and set up correctly.

Ignition timing, point gap, and advance curve all have a significant effect on how a classic car runs. We inspect, repair, and set up your ignition system โ€” and can advise on electronic conversion where appropriate.

Fuel tanks, pumps, and lines are inspected for deterioration, leaks, and blockages. We carry out cleaning, resealing, and replacement where required โ€” a particularly important task when bringing a vehicle out of extended storage

If your car is running poorly and you are unsure why, we carry out a thorough diagnostic assessment before recommending work. We explain our findings clearly and agree a course of action with you before anything is started.

common questions

FAQs

What work does the Malton Coachworks workshop carry out?

The workshop covers every mechanical and electrical aspect of a classic car: servicing, fault diagnosis, engine and gearbox rebuilds, differential overhauls, rewiring, and carburettor and ignition setup. We also fit sympathetic upgrades, from overdrive fifth gear conversions to power-assisted steering and uprated brakes.

Where can I find a classic car mechanic in North Yorkshire?

Our workshop is on Showfield Lane in Malton, North Yorkshire (YO17 6BT), a short drive from the A64. It shares the site with our Bodyshop, Trim Shop and Parts Department, so a car that needs more than mechanical work stays in our care from start to finish.

Which marques do you work on?

Our specialisms are Jaguar, MG, Austin Healey and Jensen, and the team has worked on more than 100 marques, from vintage cars with side valve engines to later prestige models with twin cam and V configuration units. If your car is less common, call us and we will tell you plainly whether we are the right workshop for it.

Do you service classic cars?

Yes. We service classic, vintage and prestige cars in regular use, and recommission cars that have been laid up, including inspecting the fuel tank, pump and lines for deterioration, leaks and blockages. Our Servicing page sets out what each service includes.

My classic car is running poorly. Can you find the fault?

Yes. We carry out a thorough diagnostic assessment of mechanical and electrical faults before recommending any work, then explain what we found and agree a course of action with you before anything is started.

Which carburettors do you rebuild and tune?

We service, tune and rebuild SU, Weber, Solex, Dellโ€™Orto and Zenith carburettors, from a single carburettor on a workhorse classic to twin choke Webers on a sports car. We set up ignition timing, points gap and advance curve at the same time, and can advise on an electronic ignition conversion where it suits the car.

Can you rewire a classic car?

Yes. Ageing wiring is one of the most common causes of faults on classic cars. We carry out repairs, full loom replacement and bespoke electrical work, keeping the period-correct appearance of the interior wherever possible.

Do you rebuild engines and gearboxes?

Yes. We strip, assess and rebuild engines to original specification, or to improved tolerances where that serves the car better, and overhaul gearboxes and differentials the same way. Any departure from original specification is agreed with you before work begins.

Which upgrades can you fit without changing the character of the car?

Overdrive fifth gear conversions for lower cruising revs, discreet power-assisted steering, uprated brakes and suspension, and stainless exhaust systems built to the correct profile. We can also advise on electronic ignition, improved lighting and air conditioning. Originality is kept wherever possible, and every change is your decision.

Does my classic car still need an MOT?

In England, Scotland and Wales, a car built or first registered more than 40 years ago is generally exempt, provided it has not been substantially changed in the last 30 years. It must still be roadworthy, so regular inspection matters.

Is workshop work guaranteed?

Yes. Work carried out by the workshop carries a six-month warranty.

How do I book my car into the workshop?

Call 01653 692090 or email workshop@maltoncoachworks.com with details of the car, its history and the work you have in mind. The workshop is open Monday to Thursday, 8.15am to 5pm, and Friday, 8.15am to 4pm. If you cannot bring the car to Malton, our transport service can collect it.
