ENGINEERING & FABRICATION

From chassis up, nothing overlooked

Having completed many full restorations, we have superb experience assessing and reconditioning the chassis. We understand the importance of retaining originality, and every project receives meticulous attention from stripping to blasting to strengthening and rebuilding.

Careful, expert chassis assessment and restoration across a plethora of makes and eras. We strip, blast, strengthen, and rebuild โ€” retaining factory geometry and specifications throughout.

Working with a wide range of materials across coating, chroming, and galvanising. Traditional methods including wheeling, bead rolling, and lead-loading โ€” supplemented by modern 3D printing capability for prototype and bespoke parts.

We design bespoke panels digitally and machine them using both traditional and modern methods. If the part no longer exists, we make it โ€” to original tolerances or improved specifications.

common questions

FAQs

What does the Malton Coachworks bodyshop do?

Our Bodyshop covers everything from the shell outwards: paintwork and refinishing, corrosion repair and reskinning, chassis restoration, lead loading, fabrication and coachbuilding, including ash frames and new panels made in-house. Work ranges from show standard restorations to MOT preparation.

Where can I get a classic car respray in North Yorkshire?

Our Bodyshop is on Showfield Lane in Malton, North Yorkshire (YO17 6BT), a short drive from the A64. Every respray is carried out in our own spray facility, and the car stays on our site, alongside our Workshop and Trim Shop, from start to finish.

Which paint system do you use, and is it guaranteed?

We are a NOVOL Gold partner and use NOVOL, Spectral Groupโ€™s refinishing system developed specifically for heritage vehicles. One system from primer to lacquer keeps every layer compatible, and our paintwork carries a warranty of up to five years.

How do you assess a car before work begins?

Every car receives a full condition review on arrival: paint depth readings, corrosion mapping and a chassis inspection. We test paint condition using both non destructive and destructive methods, then give you a written report and recommended course of action before any work is agreed.

Can you match my carโ€™s original colour?

Yes. Period correct colour is mixed and applied in our own spray facility. We use industry-class spectrometers to gauge paint pigments to mix them to the exact colour. We also carry out bespoke paint schemes and colour split work for owners who want something different.

How is a full respray carried out?

The car is fully stripped and the panels are blasted or chemically stripped to bare metal. Corrosion is treated and structural work completed, then high build primer is applied, blocked and flattened. Colour and lacquer go on in measured coats, are cured, flatted and machine polished, and the car is rebuilt and road tested.

Can you repair rust and replace rotten panels?

Yes. We treat corrosion and reskin panels to original factory specification, matching panel profiles and shut lines, and keep original metal wherever possible. Traditional methods including wheeling, bead rolling and lead loading sit alongside modern fabrication.

Can you make panels that are no longer available?

Yes. We make panels and parts in house, from bonnets formed on a buck to ash frame shells. Panels are designed digitally and made by traditional and modern methods, with 3D printing for prototypes and bespoke parts. If a part no longer exists, we make it to original tolerances or an improved specification.

Do you restore chassis?

Yes. We strip, blast, strengthen and rebuild chassis across a wide range of makes and eras, keeping factory geometry and specification throughout. Finishes include coating, chroming and galvanising.

Do you take on smaller jobs as well as full restorations?

Yes. We work to every budget, from show standard restorations to MOT preparation, and every job receives the same care and quality control.

How can I protect the paintwork afterwards?

We offer machine polishing to correct swirl marks and oxidation, ceramic coating with protection for up to seven years, and three tiers of underbody protection, from wax injection to full rubberised underseal. Each has its own page with more detail.

How do I start a bodyshop project?

Call 01653 692090 and choose option two, or email sales@maltoncoachworks.com with details of the car and the work you have in mind. We are open Monday to Thursday, 8.15am to 5pm, and Friday, 8.15am to 4pm, and you are welcome to arrange a visit.

Ready to discuss your vehicle?

Tell us about your project โ€” no obligation. Our team is happy to advise on any make, era, or scope of work.
